Editorial Reviews:

  • The EasyBloom Plant Sensor Plus gives a "plant's-eye" view of your garden or home – telling you what plants to grow or what's wrong with a sick plant. Patented technology recommends the right plant, flower, vegetable, tree, shrub or vine, for inside or outside. Stop wasting money and time on plants that aren't right for your environment--know what to grow, right from the start. The reusable EasyBloom Plant Sensor Plus uses patent-protected sensors to measure sunlight, temperature, soil moisture and soil fertility. Soil fertility is a new feature with the EasyBloom Plus and requires a subscription. Use EasyBloom indoors or outdoors. Plug EasyBloom into the USB port on your MAC or PC, and your environment will be analyzed by our Plant Doctor Algorithms to recommend plants, or assess the health of your plant. Use the EasyBloom Plant Sensor over and over again, season after season, to help care for your plants and decide what to plant. EasyBloom's web site gives you Plant Doctor advice on any sick plants. EasyBloom will tell you whether your plant needs water, light or fertilizer. (Subscription required to use fertilizer functionality). Also, get access to the EasyBloom 6,000+ Plant Library with information on when to plant, how to grow any plant, and plant care tips on everything from Azalea to Zinnias. EasyBloom gives you expert help in the palm of your hand. EasyBloom only works in the United States, and requires a PC or Mac and an internet connection.

  • Summary: Wary...
  • Comment: I'm a little wary of this object. First--I haven't tried it, but noticed some iffy things about it. Accurate sensors (except for temperature) for any of the things they test will cost hundred of dollars. And apparently the fertility reading is based on salts. Fertilizer isn't something to measure based on salts, but actual N-P-K values or at least CEC. I wouldn't trust the fertility reading at all. And 6,000 plants is a very small amount for the entire US and all its different climates. I think you'd be better off buying a good gardening book than trusting this. Not that it doesn't sound like a fun gadget to try, I just doubt the accuracy.

  • Summary: Useful and fun to use
  • Comment: I really like this product. It really helps to figure out if that shady spot is really that shady for example. The water mode is great, it teaches you how often to water, we tend to over water expecially house plants.
The price is high, but of course there's the fun factor too. The only thing I don't like it that they charge for the new fertilization feature, too bad they just didn't use advertizer support.

  • Summary: Very useful
  • Comment: Not only is the product awesome, but the 24 hour support is great too (for all your late night fertilizer questions!). And on that note, the fertilizer subscription has been worth paying for. We discovered we were over fertilizing a couple of our plants. So far very happy. And when I wrote and asked for an ehancement to their search feature they responded - normally those sorts of emails go to a block box somewhere. Very happy.

  • Summary: very cool gadget
  • Comment: I've had it for a week now and tracked four beds in our yard. For once in my life I actually feel like I can go to a plant center and know exactly what I should buy instead of trial and error! The recommendations are fantastic - and not just limited to flowers. Ferns, grasses, and fruits have been included in my selections too. The only drawback is that you have to wait a full 24 hours to get the best reading possible, so it does take a little preplanning. But this would be the same with anything that tracks sunlight in the yard. With EasyBloom you also get some really cool data based on location, moisture, soil... And much cheaper than a landscaper. The website also has a forum where you can ask questions about the product and recommendations. The folks have been very responsive and helpful.

  • Summary: Does Not Work as Advertised
  • Comment: Both the software and packaging claim that Easy Boom will collect sunlight, temperature, humidity and soil moisture data after 24 hours. This is simply not true. When I failed to get moisture data, I contacted the company and was told that this information was only available in MONITOR mode for monitoring specific plants. This can take up to a couple of weeks depending on the "watering cycle".

While the sunlight, temperature and humidity data seems to be reasonable, I have a real problem dealing with companies who intentionally misrepresent their products.

FOLLOW-UP: Subsiquent communications with the company assured me that basic soil data should be available in RECOMMEND mode. They sent me a replacement unit, and I am pleased to say that this unit provided all of the data that was promised.
